How a Load Cell Works:A load cell works by using a principle called strain gauge technology. When a force (or load) is applied to the load cell, the sensing element (usually a strain gauge) deforms. The electrical signal is typically very small, so it is usually amplified by a signal conditioner or amplifier before being processed and displayed in the desired units (like kilograms or pounds).
Key Components of a Load Cell:Strain Gauges:
Strain gauges are the main sensors in a load cell. They measure the deformation (strain) caused by the applied force and convert it into an electrical signal. Strain gauges are bonded to the load cell's structure, usually a metal body.
Metallic Body or Structure:
The load cell's structure, often made of stainless steel or aluminum, is designed to deform when a load is applied. The deformation of the material is what generates the strain detected by the strain gauges.
Wheatstone Bridge:
The strain gauges are arranged in a Wheatstone bridge circuit, which is a configuration of resistors that helps measure the change in resistance caused by strain. This bridge converts mechanical stress into a measurable electrical signal.
Excitation Voltage:
The load cell requires an external voltage (often in the range of 5-15V) to excite the strain gauges. This excitation voltage is required for the Wheatstone bridge to produce a signal.
Signal Conditioner:
Load cells typically generate low-level electrical signals that require amplification. A signal conditioner amplifies the signal and converts it into a usable format (such as volts, millivolts, or digital outputs).
