An Anilox Roller is a crucial component in the flexographic printing process. It is primarily used to transfer a precise amount of ink from the ink reservoir (anilox chamber) to the printing plate or substrate. The roller’s surface is engraved with fine cells or cavities, which hold the ink. These cells vary in size, depth, and volume to control the amount of ink applied during printing, ensuring uniform coverage and high-quality results.

1. Engraved Surface:

   • The surface of the Anilox Roller is engraved with fine cells, which can either be laser-engraved or mechanically engraved. These cells are responsible for holding and transferring the ink to the printing surface.

   • The depth and volume of these cells are crucial for controlling the amount of ink dispensed, with larger or deeper cells holding more ink and smaller cells holding less ink.

2. Materials:

   • Anilox rollers are typically made of stainless steel or aluminum, with the engraved surface often coated with chrome to enhance durability and prevent wear. The chrome plating ensures resistance to corrosion and allows the roller to withstand the abrasive nature of ink over time.

3. Cell Configuration:

   • The cell structure can vary based on the printing needs. The cells can be cylindrical, hexagonal, or diamond-shaped, depending on the specific application and the desired ink transfer.

   • Cell Volume: The volume of the cells is measured in cubic centimeters per square inch (cm³/in²), indicating how much ink the roller can hold. The volume is crucial in determining the level of ink transfer to the substrate.

4. Manual Operation:

   • While modern anilox rollers are often automated, manual control can be used in smaller-scale or specialized applications. In manual operation, the operator adjusts the roller’s speed and the pressure between the roller and the substrate to achieve the desired print quality.

   • Manual Anilox rollers are typically used for specialized tasks where fine adjustments are needed and where automated systems may not be as flexible or suitable.
