A Rotogravure Cylinder, also known as an engraved roller, is a critical component used in the rotogravure (gravure) printing process. These cylinders are precision-engineered and feature thousands of tiny, recessed cells that hold ink and transfer it onto a substrate during printing.

• Engraved Surface: The cylinder has a surface that is meticulously engraved with tiny cells. These cells can vary in size and depth depending on the desired print result. The engraved cells hold the ink and release it onto the substrate as the cylinder rotates.

• Precision Engraving: There are various methods used to engrave the cylinder:

  • Laser Engraving: Uses a laser to create high-resolution and precise engraving.

  • Chemical Etching: Applies a resist film and uses chemicals to etch the design into the cylinder.

  • Diamond Stylus Engraving: Involves a diamond-tipped tool that engraves the pattern either manually or mechanically.

• Surface Finishing: After engraving, the cylinder is often chrome-plated to enhance durability, reduce wear, and prevent corrosion. This helps the cylinder last longer and maintain its performance even in harsh printing environments.
